The BRIT Awards 2022 have been criticized by a number of artists, music industry insiders and fans for not including any R&B artist in its Best Pop / R & B Act category.
Last month, four new genre categories were introduced in the annual awards ceremony: Alternative / Rock Act, Hip-Hop / Grime / Rap Act, Dance Act and Pop / R & B Act.
After news of the new categories broke, she came under heavy criticism from artists, music experts and fans on social media, many of whom questioned why R&B was merged with pop.
“Putting pop and R&B in the same category is really crazy for me. And proves the powers that be just don’t get it, ”said R&B singer-songwriter Mahalia tweeted. “I love the British. I’ve had it since I was a kid. But as an R&B singer / songwriter it definitely doesn’t seem progressive for the entire UK R&B scene.
The nominees for next year’s BRITs were announced on Sunday, December 18. Ed Sheeran, Adele, Dua Lipa, Griff and Joy Crookes lead the nominations in the Pop / R & B category, which confused a number of people.
“So the BRIT nominations have come in and something is a little weird, or curious about the category there,” said R&B singer-songwriter Sinéad Harnett in a video shared on Twitter.
She prefaced the next part of her video by explaining that she “absolutely adores[s] each of the ‘category artists. “They’re fucking amazing,” she said. “But I have two questions: the first is why merge pop with R&B? And the second is, if you’re going to do that, please at least include some R&B acts in the category.

BRITs voting panel member Joseph “JP” Patterson added, “I’m happy to be on the voting panel this year – the best part is it was born in a minute! But this category needs to be rethought. No one here does R&B.
Glad to be on the voting panel this year – the best is in a minute!

“I’m sorry but Dua Lipa, Ed and Adele don’t do R&B music, who came up with the idea of putting these two genres into one category?” a fan wrote. Another said: “I really don’t understand why the BRITs have decided to lump pop and R&B into one category this year. Aside from ZERO UK R&B nominated artists, what luck would any of them have alongside Adele and Ed Sheeran? “
A third said: “#boycottbrits because what the heck they thought. First they merge pop and R&B into one category, and now the nominees for that category are all Pop artists. @BRITs, you could have added at least one UK RnB artist to it.

#boycott because what the hell were they thinking. First they merge pop and R&B into one category, and now the nominees for that category are all pop artists. @BRIT you could have added at least one British RnB artist to it.

I have a real problem with the combination of Pop with R&B ??? 2 totally different genres @BRIT ?
– MAX (@ThisIsMax) December 18, 2021
The pop / r & b category among the British is a bit of a shame though. Because every year pop artists will be nominated because they are mainstream. I think they should have called a spade a spade and named it best pop group.

Little Simz nominated for Best New Artist, Pop / R&B a Combined Category .. BRITs to be revised lmao

Sounds understandable, but BRITs are actually chart based and R&B isn’t really on the charts (yet), so the alternative, I guess, is to leave it out? But that’s also why it’s important to buy R&B music when it’s released. https://t.co/s1LIlrBtZc

I can’t lie I’m disappointed on #BRIT combined Pop and R&B category. There are some very worthy nominations for R&B alone that have been missed, including @thisNAO, @cleosol, @hamzaa and @SineadHarnett but that’s my opinion ️

It’s good that the BRITs have removed the genre categories… but they need more genre categories… POP AND R&B in one category, in 2022 ?! No. https://t.co/dxcQTUIdao

The BRITs are black as hell this year, they love it. Not feeling the erasure of R&B but alas, from one fight to the next ey.

Where’s the R&B act?

Next year’s BRIT Awards take place on February 8 at the O2 in London and will be broadcast live on ITV. It will be hosted by Mo Gilligan.
Gilligan will replace Jack Whitehall as host of the show, which recently announced he is stepping down from his role after four consecutive years.
Meanwhile, Holly Humberstone has been announced as the winner of this year’s BRITs Rising Star Award, after fending off competition from Bree Runway and Lola Young.
