How it goes with COVID-19 protocols, vaccinations at the ACL festival

AUSTIN (KXAN) – As Austin City Limits kicked off on day two, Austin-Travis County celebrated a win by moving to Stage 3 of the COVID-19 risk-based guidelines.

The progress is based on a decrease in intensive care and hospital admissions.

Travis County is offering COVID-19 vaccines at the ACL festival to keep numbers down.

The Travis County Mobile Vaccination Team will provide COVID-19 vaccines at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on both weekends (October 1-3 and October 8-10).

University of Texas freshman Osman Moradel dropped by the clinic on Saturday and jumped at the chance to get the shot.

“I saw it and thought I might as well get it, I’m here and probably won’t experience any side effects until tomorrow,” Moradel said.

Travis County reports that the majority of people who come to the mobile clinic come for their booster injection, but there are some limitations.

“At this time, guidelines are only allowed for Pfizer boosters,” said Hector Nieto, of the Travis County communications team.

The Center for Disease Control does not recommend mixing vaccination brands, so some people have been turned away.

Those who receive their second Pfizer dose or the Pfizer booster should bring their CDC COVID-19 vaccination registration card, so that it can be updated.

“The fact that people get vaccinated and people bring their vaccination cards, I feel safe,” Moradel said.

Festival-goers must present their vaccination record or a negative COVID-19 test to be able to enter. ACL reports that on the first day – which was Friday – 86% of people showed their vaccination cards, 14% tested negative and less than 1% were refused for not having one.

In Travis County, about 71% of its population aged 12 and over has been vaccinated.

Travis County’s online calendar and map show immunization events taking place in the county.

Anyone 12 years of age and older can receive their first or second dose of Pfizer vaccine. Pfizer boosters will also be available for those who qualify. The vaccination team will operate from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day of the festival.
