Under the artistic direction of pianists Miri Yampolsky and Xak Bjerken, the Department of Music at the College of Arts and Sciences presents Mayfest, its annual springtime world-class chamber music festival. From May 20-24, Mayfest will feature performances by outstanding guest artists from around the world.
Featured artists this year include five-time Grammy-winning soprano Dawn Upshaw; saxophonist Steven Banks, recent recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Fellowship; Guy Braunstein, former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra; Vesselin Gellev, third concertmaster of the London Philharmonic Orchestra; violist Nikki Divall, former member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and principal viola of Apollo’s Fire; clarinetist Chen Halevi, a frequent chamber music collaborator with festivals like Marlboro and Santa Fe; and flautist Gili Schwarzman, who has toured regularly with a chamber music group from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and performs with many European orchestras.
Familiar favorites include cellist Zvi Plesser, who has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, among others; violinist Xiao-Dong Wang of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; and Cornell Senior Lecturer and Artist in Residence, cellist John Haines-Eitzen.
the five days of Mayfest concerts offer a range of music from familiar masterpieces to less explored compositions that will showcase the unique blend of instruments and performers. Tickets are available online or at the door: full festival passes are available for $100 for adults and $10 for students, or individual tickets are $25 for adults, $5 for students and are free for listeners under 18 accompanied by an adult.
