New Year’s Six spot against foe ACC is a common choice for Nittany Lions

Penn State clinched bowl eligibility on Saturday night with its resounding 45-17 win over Minnesota, virtually guaranteeing the Nittany Lions a 13th game later this year. The question now is whether this game will take place in December or January, and what the stakes of this game could be.

Penn State is ranked No. 13 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and the USA Sports AFCA Coaches poll, and the Nittany Lions reached No. 10 earlier this month. This puts Penn State in the conversation for a spot in the New Year’s Six, depending on how the rest of the season goes.

Penn State has shown there can still be a playoff tie, even if its final record isn’t exactly impressive after earning a berth in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day with a record 7 -5 in the regular season last season. In seven games in 2022, the Nittany Lions are 6-1, and they could be favored in four of their last five games (the only exception being this weekend’s big game against No. Ohio).

After Ohio State, Penn State ends the regular season with a trip to Indiana, a home game against Maryland, a game at Rutgers and the final against Michigan State at Beaver Stadium with the Land-Grant Trophy on the line. The Terrapins are the only one of those four teams to receive votes in major polls.
