Tiny Desk Concert (house): NPR

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and around the world. It’s the same spirit – stripped down decor, an intimate setting – just a different space.

The foreground of Bonobo’s Tiny Desk (home) concert is a bit confusing. What looks like the official Tiny Desk at NPR headquarters in Washington, DC is actually an eerily accurate miniature replica. Equipped with scaled-down vinyl records and Bob Boilen trinkets, it was created by Cheronda Scott of CSpykerMiniatures and Kat Williams of Real Life Miniatures. “We couldn’t be at the NPR desk, but we brought it with us,” says Simon Green, aka Bonobo, pointing to the small desk, perfect for a doll.

British-born, Los Angeles-based DJ and artist Bonobo is known for his minimalistic and creepy electronica. Playing from a warehouse in Nashville, Tennessee, where he says he’s been rehearsing for an upcoming tour, Bonobo’s digital, synth-driven sound is complemented by a full band, bringing a new warmth to the music.

The artist’s latest album fragments was recorded in the early years of the pandemic and inspired by the stagnation the Grammy-nominated artist felt isolated at home. Here he performs three songs from that album, beginning with the calm “Tides”, featuring the breathy guest vocals of captivating Hundred Waters vocalist Nicole Miglis. He then continues with “Shadows”, performed with singer Jordan Rakei and “From You” from the album. Bringing it home, he finishes with 2016’s “Break Apart,” originally recorded with vocalist Rhye but with Miglis here on the mic, for a set that hits like a series of quietly seizing lullabies.
