The nine seniors in the HISD school group received scholarships from HBCU Langston University in Oklahoma.
HOUSTON, Texas – The news was music to their ears.
Some members of the Worthing High School âMarching Pride of Sunnysideâ have much to celebrate after learning that they are receiving scholarships from Langston University in Oklahoma.
âI’m the first person in my family to go to college,â said trombonist Nicholas Lockett.
Lockett is one of nine senior members of the group to win the $ 50,000 scholarship.
âI think the world of it,â Lockett said. “It’s just awesome.”

Members of the group learned the news after a recent tryout alongside other high schools.
The trip was coordinated by the director of the Worthing group, Kuan Mitchell, especially for the elderly.
âNot to sound arrogant, but because I pushed them in a certain way, I expected it,â Mitchell said.
Worthing High School principal Everett Hare also attended the trip and called the experience a life changing.
âI have never seen where all of them got scholarships,â Hare said. “Some students had never visited a college campus.”
Thresher Tamara Jordan has been honing her skills for three years.
âIt’s complicated, but you enjoy it once you do it for a while,â Jordan said.
The director of Worthing said these achievements could serve as an example for future students.
“They work hard, are able to balance environmental factors, but are also making progress academically,” said principal Everett Hare. âNow they are showing their talents and have so much potential. We are therefore delighted. “
Scholarships aren’t the only things that get people excited.
HISD said the Worthing group will represent Houston at next year’s July 4 nationwide celebrations in Washington, DC.
